Certification in Agriculture (Level 5)

This course is suitable for people who wish to make their careers in farming and the agri industry. The course is very suitable for future farmers and for people seeking employment on farms. There is no minimum educational entry requirement but those who have completed the Leaving Certificate are likely to benefit most from the course. Applicants must be 17 years on or before January 1st in the year of entering the course.

 

Course Content:

 

Students on the course will acquire skills and knowledge relating to soils and plants. animal and crop production science, farm business management, machinery, enterprise development and management, the environment, farm buildings, personal development and health and safety. About half of the course consists of practical/skills training. Typically, students spend half of each day on the farm and workshops and half at classroom work. Computer applications is an important part of this course.

 

Students may choose a cluster of elective modules in one of the specialisms:

 

- Dairy production  Drystock production  Crop production.

 

 

Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture (Dairy Herd Management)

 

Students who have completed the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Agriculture are eligible to apply for this course. Apply directly to the college. Selection for places is by interview, held in June/July.

 

This full time course, is the preferred additional training required to equip students with the husbandry and management skills to run a successful dairy farm. It also prepares graduates for further training in farm management, farm work abroad and careers in the agri-industry.

 

Students will complete a 20 weeks of course work at the college and a further 16 weeks of a practical learning period will be completed on an approved host farm. On successful completion of the course students are awarded a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Agriculture. Students who successfully complete this course meet the training requirements for Stamp Duty Exemption.
